Dystopian fiction – winter pick-me-up?
But I’d been wanting to read Philip K. Dick’s classic for years and not got around to it. And I was surprised – it’s grimly funny, very prescient and page-turningly paced. I had tried to read Valis but found that hard-going – so concerned with religious beliefs that seemed quite obscure. In contrast Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep was deftly plotted and the world building quite extraordinary. I loved the combination of new technology with the post-war ruins – and the rise of new aspirations. Prescient, as I said – cloned Dire Wolves anyone?
The toad was heart-breaking. That’s all I will say.
